Social Impact
Social Impact & Special AchievementsThe asociated members are distributed in the Pisquera Zone, 700 kilometers long, the average age of the members is 70 years and they have an average area of less than 4 hectares of pisco grape. Most of them do not live with their children, they generally do all the work of the field except pruning and harvesting, and their income depends mainly on the grapes, their pensions and the social assistance of the State. The level of schooling is low and most do not have higher education. In general, they live in the countryside, away from the big cities. The main problems they face are: low access to the bank for age and income, difficulty in obtaining temporary labor, the drought that has affected the area for more than 9 years and the low income they have in their vineyards, which on average are 22 tonnes/ha, under circumstances that could achieve 50 tonnes/ha. The mission of the cooperative is to develop and market products based on grapes to improve the quality of life of its members. In addition to repaying the delivery of the grapes, Capel distributes the annually surpluses among its members and has a number of social programs that benefit them, such as scholarships, solidarity health fund, agreements. In many valleys Capel is the largest agricultural enterprise in the area and sponsors various social and cultural activities. They estimate that new consumers towards products with fair trade certification should go up. Their Cooperative is interested in participating in this increase, obtaining greater sales and consequently, increasing the income of the members to improve their vineyards and their quality of life. In order for the Fair Trade chain to reach a significant scale, it will be essential to establish a complete commercial chain in which the Fair Trade Development Premium is paid to a fund established for this purpose, and thus to finance social development projects that are significant for their producers that are part of the communities where the operations of the Cooperative are inserted.
Use of Fair Trade PremiumIn 2016 the Fair Trade premium was received from its OXFAM client and added to the Cooperative Solidarity Fund account, which is administrated by the social comittee, elected by the Board of Directors and approved during General asembly of Members to allocate this social assistance account to the members. The premium was not yet used. The Cooperative Solidarity Fund regulation defines and specifies the amounts of co-payment for medical, dental and ophthalmologic benefits requested by the Cooperated.
