Certification for fair trade and responsible supply chains
Impact, special achievements & commitmentsPower Maw Shan Co, Ltd (Myanmar), is a leading Myanmar tea company, established in 1986, starting as a family business of growing and processing tea in Southern Shan State, Pindaya. Commitment to fair trade principles is in the core of Power Maw Shan operations, a company with strong links to the local community. While continuously improving its tea processing and trading, founders of Maw Shan decided to expand its production and started buying tea from surround tea farmers under smallholder cultivation. The company understands, that key to quality and consistent production is maintaining close relationship with their farmers. In 2019, they work with over 200 smallholder farmers!
Innovation never stops at Maw Shan: Their range of products covers not only traditional green and black (red) tea, but also fermented tea, which can be eaten as a snack, white tea and even ancient tree tea from 400-year-old tea bushes!
Company’s commitment to environmental sustainability led to full overhaul of its production, turning to biodiesel powered drying facilities and water recycling. They were the first company in Myanmar to certify its suppliers as EU/ USDA organic, which opened the doors to export markets. Fair for Life certification is an important step for them to evaluate their policies and procedures against best practices, communicate importance of fair trade principles towards their suppliers, clients and employees and support their farmer community initiatives.
