| Impact, actions & engagements remarquables | | | In a formerly war-ravaged region in Northern Uganda, Gulu Agricultural Development Company (GADC) purchases, gins and sells fair trade cotton from smallholder farmers. Many of these farmers were Internally Displaced Persons who are returning to their farms for the first time in many years. With the fair-trade program, GADC can pay premium prices to local cotton farmers and sell the cotton lint to foreign buyers at a healthy profit. AJFA is an association of 6 639 farmers and GADC workers association comprising of 59 members based in northern Uganda. The association’s mission is to harness and equip its member groups and their communities for social transformation, sustainable economic development and a just society. In forming an association, farmers are better able to access markets, financial support and improve their agronomic practices and productive capacity. The fair-trade premium is used for community development projects; the first of which are a clean cook stove program for farmers and their families and the purchase of ox ploughs to enhance farm productivity. |
