Impact, special achievements & commitmentsJungle Macs (EPZ) Ltd (K) is a limited company in Kenya which was registered in 2004. It is managed by the shareholders. The company purchases organic products from small scale holders mainly in the Mt. Kenya region: Counties of Kiambu, Muranga, Nyeri, Embu, Baringo, Tharaka NithiTaita and Meru and processes to edible kernels which are exported to various market destinations. The company’s major markets are USA, EU, Australia, China and Japan. Zuri Greens Organic Ltd is a Kenyan Company with tremendous heritage and linkage to the local community. The company’s cashews are grown in the Kenyan coastal strip next to the world renowned game reserves of Tsavo East and West. Macadamia are naturally grown in the mineral rich highland soils of Mt. Kenya, right through the equator. This gives a crunchier, richer, quality nut making the name jungle nuts. The company is composed of a very strong quality control team which checks every bag of nut that enters our factory. The company have already received ISO 22000 certification and was awarded Kenya Top 100 SME award in the year 2011. The operation of Zuri Greens Organic Ltd is distributed in 11 Counties: Kiambu, Muranga, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru and Taita. When the project started, farmers were recruited from the whole County and were operating as individual farmers with no organization. The company has organized several consultative meetings with the famers including trainings, awareness meetings and planning meetings. Through the meetings, the farmers have expressed the need to have formal organization with a strong linkage with the company. This will enhance a strong relationship between the company and the farmers and ensure participation of farmers in quality management at the community level. Though the company relates with its farmers in a contract production way, the farmers under organic and fair trade programme have been clustered into 137 clusters as per the Counties. Further, in each County the farmers are grouped as per their locality and as a way of getting the issues emanating from their localities, which can be supported by Jungle foundation. Some of the key investments of fair trade premium for the last 3 years in the different groups have been: a) Purchase of 150 dehuskers for clusters b) Financing loan guarantorship for all the 137 clusters c) one cluster (Mukinduri cluster has purchased a cluster farm c) Purchase of macadamia and avocado seedlings d) purchase of inputs (fertilizers and organic pesticides), distribution of masks and sanitizers especially in the era of Covid 19. The farmers in these zones also grow coffee, macadamia nuts, avocado, pineapple, Moringa, mangoes, cashew nuts, coconut and beans which are bought by the company and processed for sale in the domestic market or export market. Jungle macs Ltd process products for both export and domestic market as follows; Macadamia kernels, macadamia oil, fresh avocado, avocado oil, roasted coffee beans, green coffee beans, moringa leaves, molinga powder, molinga oil, pineapple fruits and dried pineapple fruits. Apart from farmers, the other target group for CSR includes the youth leaving in the production areas where the company source produce. Due to the increased unemployment, youths sit idle in shopping centres which fuel insecurity. Jungle foundation supports them with income generation opportunities, and football games. The other category are workers of the company who also benefit from fair trade premium. They have various challenges including sickness and social needs. Currently, the company employs an average of 300 workers throughout the year and has a long term expansion strategy to provide more employment opportunities especially to the youth.
