Impact, special achievements & commitmentsEsco Kivu in Watalinga:Esco Kivu is a private company which was established in DR Congo in 1970 and instigated the planting of cocoa by smallholder farmers in Eastern Congo in 2000. Since then it has been promoting cocoa production through provision of planting materials, farmer training, and direct purchasing from farmers through many village stores and collection centers.Esco Kivu is a certified organic, UTZ, and FFL exporter of cocoa. Esco helped to pioneer the Eastern Congo cocoa sector and has established a regional operation that includes a sorting center, extension service and buying and exporting operation. In partnership with Theo Chocolate, Esco Kivu is training farmers in the remote Watalinga area by providing fermentation boxes to improve on the quality of the beans and other technical support. Through meeting rigorous sustainability and good agricultural practices, over 4,810 registered farmer benefit from certification premiums.Theo Chocolate visits Watalinga farmers every year since the project started. From 2012 to date, we have so far exported 2,940 MT of cocoa beans out of which farmers benefited a total of US$780,000. Esco and Theo Chocolate are committed to serve the farmers in Watalinga and in DRCongo at large despite the insecurity in the area.
