Social Impact
Social Impact & Special AchievementsThey have pledged a FT premium of 15 % on all coconut oil, palm kernel and red palm oil purchases. This is indicated on commercial invoices, to make the amount for FFL premium clear to everyone immediately. This 15 % amount is deposited into a separate account for their community project. However, they will continue to spend much, much more on their projects than this amount – both in Togo, and here in the USA for all the collection, shipping and preparations for the projects, such as their bicycles for education project. While they fully understand that a democratic committee is the ideal way for FFL premium allocation, it is impossible in their case. Corruption and embezzlement is ingrained in their society, and they cannot afford to lose any funds intended for projects. Most importantly, the on-going projects that they have require way more funds than FFL premium would provide on its own. They are not at the stage anymore to start new projects. It is more critical for their communities to maintain their existing projects. Furthermore, there is need for extreme delicacy in their relationship with different ethnic groups, villages, government authorities and communities. For example, in central Togo, they have increasing pressure from other ethnic groups to establish a traditional processing cooperative in their communities. This is not possible for them, and to prevent ethnic friction, they can conduct a community project in their areas. But, if in Togo, they put a democratic committee process in place, it is clear that those on the committee would not allocate funds to a community that is not part of their ethnic groups or collector group. Alaffia is truly about uplifting all communities, and not just communities.
Use of Fair Trade PremiumSee Social and Fair Trade History and Social and Fair Trade Policy documents for details on how projects came about and are administered. Representatives from management, office administration, workers and collector groups are all involved in the projects.
