Social Impact
Social Impact & Special AchievementsIn addition to providing fair, equitable employment to hundreds of low-income women in the central and southern regions of Togo, Alaffia has also achieved great social impact through community empowerment initiatives, as detailed below: Bicycles for education: In response to: drop-out rate of 91 % of girls and 48 % of boys. Students in rural areas must often walk 10 - 15 miles a day to school which is a leading contributor to drop-out rate. Bikes are collected in the US and distributed in over 60 Togo villages. Graduation rate for Alaffia bike recipients: over 90 %. 7,100 bikes collected and distributed to date.

Maternal Health Project: In response to the high mortality rate in West Africa – approximately 162,000 women and 1 million infants die each year due to lack of basic maternal care. Alaffia has provided full healthcare for 4,142 women to date.

Reforestation Project: In response to deforestation in Africa (10 million acres per year, with the highest occurring in West Africa) Alaffia now works with rural farmers to plant a variety of trees each year — 53,125 to date.

School Project: Benches and metal roofs provided to schools each year to create a safe and productive learning environment. 10 schools built to date.

Eyeglasses: They collect eyeglasses at retailer locations throughout the US to be sent to Togo where an eye exam can cost as much as one month’s wage and glasses can cost up to 4 months of wages. 14,200 pairs collected to date.
